01What it does

What Beyond Capital Fund does

Mission

Beyond Capital Fund (bcf) is a women-led evergreen fund structured as a u.s. 501(c)3 nonprofit entity that has been a pioneer in impact and gender lens investing. Since 2009, bcf has invested in conscious leaders building enterprises to address the growing needs of one billion consumers lacking access to basic goods and services in nascent markets of africa and india. Our verticals span agriculture, sanitation & waste, financial inclusion, and healthcare.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. What do we do? We are a social impact fund that invests in for-profit social enterprises throughout india and east africa. Though we seek market rate financial returns, beyond capital is structured as a nonprofit, and we can remain patient and not pressured by arbitrary fund horizons, which permits us to emphasize fidelity to our social mission alongside our financial mandate. For whom do we do it? We invest in businesses focused on greater access to health care, water, sanitation and energy, as well as food security and financial inclusion, which can increase the quality of life and standard of living for consumers at the bottom of the pyramid. When do we do it? Often, we are the first professional investment capital and can be deployed in conjunction with foundation grants or repayable development grant capital. We exist in a capital gap professional investors are in short supply because social enterprises appear higher risk in developing markets. Our expertise and familiarity with these markets, mitigates the challenges of investing in what are perceived high-risk investments for others. How do we do it? We tackle the lack of capital for social enterprises by providing seed…

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $5k → $27k.

6 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 65% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of BEYOND CAPITAL FUND’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BEYOND CAPITAL FUND leans on a few funders — its largest provides 39% of grant income and the top three 87%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

65% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BEYOND CAPITAL FUND.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

20% of BEYOND CAPITAL FUND's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 30% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

65% of BEYOND CAPITAL FUND's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $205k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Texas, across 3 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $377k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
