01What it does

What Berkshire Montessori School Inc does

Mission

To work in the tradition of dr. Maria montessori to inspire children to develop independent thinking, self-assurance, inner discipline, and a love of learning in an authentic montessori environment.

As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.

Program

  1. In 2006, todd covert and meagan ledendecker opened the doors to a small montessori classroom in the berkshires. With just 24 students ages 3 to 6, they had a bold vision: to create a school rooted in montessori values where children could grow with confidence, independence, and a deep connection to the world around them. From that modest beginning, the montessori school of the berkshires (msb) began to grow. Within a few years, the original space could no longer hold the expanding community. In 2010, msb moved to its current location: a custom-designed, energy-efficient building nestled on 40 acres of berkshire woodland. The school continued to evolve, expanding in 2017 to accommodate growing enrollment and support a fully integrated montessori program with a strong focus on academic excellence. Along the way, msb enriched its campus and programming to align with its educational philosophy-adding a greenhouse, upgraded playgrounds, a chicken coop, an apiary, and a maple sugaring operation. The establishment of the land stewardship program further deepened this connection, enhancing outdoor learning spaces and courtyards, maintaining a network of trails that extend learning beyond…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income fell $330k → $17k.

6 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of BERKSHIRE MONTESSORI SCHOOL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BERKSHIRE MONTESSORI SCHOOL INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 89% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BERKSHIRE MONTESSORI SCHOOL INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

20% of BERKSHIRE MONTESSORI SCHOOL INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 38% give in more than one year at all.

Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

100% of BERKSHIRE MONTESSORI SCHOOL INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $2k that is directly attributable, 51% of it comes from funders outside Massachusetts, across 2 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $7.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
