01What it does

What Berkshire Childrens Chorus Inc does

Mission

Founded in 1990, Berkshire Children's Chorus explores the globe and travels through time by singing music from various cultures and eras, while also sparking new friendships between singers from across the region. BCC is committed to providing musical opportunities for all youth regardless of their family's ability to pay. Berkshire Children's Chorus is supported by grants from Local Cultural Councils and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, as well as donations from community members. BCC serves rural children in grades 3 to 8 in Berkshire County. Weekly rehearsals feature the development of individual self-confidence and teamwork skills, as well as music reading, ear training, and vocal technique. The Chorus uses music to spark new friendships between singers from across the Berkshire region, offering weekly rehearsals in Sheffield and Pittsfield. Families can choose which rehearsal location works best for them. The two ensembles come together for special events and performance.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Program

  1. The Chorus performed at the Red Lion Inn for the first time. The Chorus performs for audiences of 200+ at each performance. We maintained our tuition model to increase accessibility by offering a sliding scale model that offers automatic scholarships to families based on their self-reported income. In the past year we have seen the Chorus continue the house concert successfully.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $1k → $21k.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 86% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of BERKSHIRE CHILDRENS CHORUS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BERKSHIRE CHILDRENS CHORUS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 65% of grant income and the top three 92%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

86% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BERKSHIRE CHILDRENS CHORUS INC.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 70% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

86% of BERKSHIRE CHILDRENS CHORUS INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $12k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from Massachusetts funders.

MA

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $73k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
