01What it does

What Basicneeds US Inc does

Mission

BasicNeeds US promotes the development of community support groups in the global south for marginalized people with mental illness. We fund development strategies for training community groups to provide mutual support through inclusive village banking practices, participatory dialogue and cooperative livelihoods. We provide seed funding and consultation to promote these innovative efforts globally in partnership with the BasicNeeds Network, CBM UK and other global mental health leadership groups.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Promoting VSLAs in Community Support Groups: In April 2025, BNUS travelled to Ghana to visit with inclusive VSLA groups. We met with BN Ghana staff, local groups and government officials to identify development issues and review progress from previous years' grants from the ECOM Foundation. The visit was important to better understand local conditions, capacity and opportunities for success. To strengthen the process and documentation behind establishing Inclusive VSLAs, BNUS provided unrestricted support from reserves for BasicNeeds Basic Rights Kenya and BasicNeeds Ghana to work together to document the VSLA work for expansion in the BasicNeeds Network.

  2. Increasing the capacity of the BasicNeeds Network: BasicNeeds US developed and agreed to a letter of intent in late September 2025 for CBM UK to host a $25K reserve fund starting in 2026 to be used for key development expenses of the BasicNeeds Network, as directed by the new leadership from Ghana and Kenya. We will continue supporting cooperative governance and shared practice within the BasicNeeds Network globally. All time and costs were pro bono.

Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income fell $33k → $33k.

2 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 2% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of BASICNEEDS US INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BASICNEEDS US INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 74% of grant income and the top three 99%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

75% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BASICNEEDS US INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
