01What it does

What Arizona Local News Foundation does

Mission

The Arizona Local News Foundation exists to connect communities with more local news and information. Backed by the Arizona Media Association and overseen by an independent board of local journalism supporters, we fund programs that ensure local news is accessible in every Arizona community. Over just the last decade, Arizona has lost hundreds of local journalists and dozens of local media sources because of fast-changing technology and weakened business models. That trend is accelerating and many Arizona small towns are now designated as new deserts, meaning they no longer have any local news source. This is a threat to democracy just as much as a threat to information. We are a coalition supported by nearly every local media brand operating in the state. Arizona Local News Foundation is here to fix the problem and need more philanthropic support to join us.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The Foundation fully funded 32 paid interships at newsrooms across Arizona. The Foundation launched the Arizona Community Collaborative to focus more conversation on education solutions by fully supporting 16 local newsrooms that are receiving 24 months of funding. The Foundation held 3 symposiums centered around education solutions in Arizona throughout the state.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 1% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $610k from one payer (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Arizona Media Association). These are real filings, and they are not money Arizona Local News Foundation raised.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $20k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
