01What it does

What American Society of Papyrologists does

Mission

The asp was founded in 1961 to further the study of ancient greek and latin papyri and of the materials contained in them. Since that time, the society has embraced papyrological research in other languages as well; its journal currently supports publications in demotic egyptian, coptic, and arabic, with the ambition to broaden coverage to include hieratic egyptian and aramaic in the future. The society supports and encourages research in the field, the teaching of the discipline, and international cooperation by scholars. The asp publishes the bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists (basp), the only north american journal in the field of papyrology. It publishes a monograph series, american studies in papyrology, and occasional supplements to basp. It also sponsors summer institutes in papyrology, to train future generations of papyrologists.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Publication and distribution of the society's annual journal (bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists) and monograph series (american studies in papyrology), promotion and support of papyrological studies in north america including support for the summer institute in papyrology and for the triennial north american papyrological seminar.

1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 0% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PAPYROLOGISTS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 100% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PAPYROLOGISTS draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside North Carolina, across 1 state in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $141 arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
