01What it does

What American Composers Alliance does

Mission

First established in the 1930s, aca has developed as a publishing administrator for american concert music, representing composers and estates through several generations of creative work. With a curated catalog of over 15,000 works, aca preserves historical works, introduces new works, and develops innovative ways to increase awareness, performance opportunities and public engagement with a unique and growing catalog preserved in print and modern digital formats.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The primary program activity for aca involves the management and preservation of a collection of classical music by several generations of american composers, dating to 1905. The goal is to continue the work of the organizations's founders to support and curate new creative work and also preserve historical works, maintaining a diverse catalog that reaches performing artists world-wide. The grranting of administration and custodial rights to aca by the authors allows for their music to remain in print for study and performance for the long term future. During the 2022-2023 year aca was awarded a government grant from the national endowment for the arts (nea) in the amount of 10,000 for work being done on the catalog through 2023. Expenses towards this project were incurred during the current fiscal year - so while the grant will not be awarded until the next fiscal year, the current year deficit will be corrected in the following year when the award is received.

Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $2k → $14k.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 38% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of AMERICAN COMPOSERS ALLIANCE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

AMERICAN COMPOSERS ALLIANCE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 86%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

38% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund AMERICAN COMPOSERS ALLIANCE.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 74% · 2021 77% · 2022 46% · 2023 86% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $32k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
