01What it does

What American Board of Psychoanalysis does

Mission

The mission of the abpsa is to develop and provide reliable procedures and to implement processes for national certification in adult, child, and adolescent psychoanalysis for qualified professionals to ensure post graduate clinical competence in the core competencies of psychoanalytic theory and practice, and to conduct ongoing assessment of such core competencies and the certification processes.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Examination - abpsa offers national board certification examinations that evaluate a clinician's ability to present their psychoanalytic work in terms of basic competencies developed by past members of the committee and outside consultants. All examinations are conducted in a blind fashion, and certification is granted when an applicant has demonstrated satisfactory understanding of psychoanalysis and competencies to effectively conduct psychoanalysis.

    $39,017 spent
    38% of program spending
  2. Research & development - in order for abpsa to support further integration of the core competencies at training institutes, the institute outreach project was created. Interviews were conducted at various institutes across the country to learn how these institutes were currently integrating the updated core competencies.

    $23,121 spent
    22% of program spending
  3. Registry - current fellows are listed on the registry which is searchable by the public. Fellows have access to update their profiles. Fellow profiles within the registry contain certification dates, psychoanalytic education, as well as areas the public finds helpful, such as specialties, client focus, treatment approach, and whether the fellow accepts insurance. The registry is updated regularly when applicants pass the examination or are removed due to not renewing their certification.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base narrowed from 3 funders to 2 funders, grant income fell $25k → $5k.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 51% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of AMERICAN BOARD OF PSYCHOANALYSIS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

AMERICAN BOARD OF PSYCHOANALYSIS leans on a few funders — its largest provides 51% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

51% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund AMERICAN BOARD OF PSYCHOANALYSIS.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 60% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — growing more concentrated.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

51% of AMERICAN BOARD OF PSYCHOANALYSIS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $50k that is directly attributable, 70% of it comes from funders outside Colorado, across 2 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $52k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
