What Akahiao Nature Institute does
Mission
Explore the world with a sense of wonder; discover the hidden pathways, the unwritten histories, your own personal story and a world of new possibilities; innovate with creative excellence to build models of a better world and integrate life, learning, communities and a sense of place into a purposeful existence.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Program
Akahiao Nature Institute is a multi-service organization whose vision is to create a model for our future - a place where people and nature live as one and take care of each other in a mutually beneficial way of love and respect. Akahiao runs nature immersion programs for youth and a nature- based preschool that centers around outdoor learning. The fundamental goal of anis programs is to give the next generation the time and understanding with our planet to develop a meaningful relationship. The learning at ani is guided by the cultivation of two natures: the nature of our keiki with their individual strengths; and by the natural world where quality learning happens. We strive to develop a relationship of reciprocity and thankfulness between the two natures and amongst the keiki themselves. Through exploration of the natural world, we believe our keiki will discover their innate sense of wonder and curiosity, enhance their physical aptitude and develop a strong sense of self in relation to the world around us. The youth programs include values workshops that help our youth discover their strengths, their values and their contributions to the world.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2022 to 2023, from $197k to $432k (+119%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
36% of AKAHIAO NATURE INSTITUTE’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (62% for the typical peer).
