01What it does

What Yorkshire Playhouse does

Mission

The Yorkshire Playhouse is an amateur community theatre whose mission is to bring live theatre performances to our local patrons as well as visitors from many surrounding areas. Offerings include four to five main stage productions, a children's theatre (described elsewhere), a "rising stars" production for young person (middle school through high school), and a script writing opportunity for aspiring playwrights. The playhouse works closely with local york university providing additional opportunity for students to broaden their theatre experience outside their usual academic venue. High school seniors who have participated in playhouse productions are invited to apply for scholarships to help fund their college educations. All board members and participants are volunteers. There are no paid positions.

As stated on its FY2026 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. COMMUNITY THEATRE -The Yorkshire Playhouse produces four to five main stage productions each year. In addition, a summer Children's Theatre is underwritten (described elsewhere). Also, interested persons are invited to submit original one-act play scripts to be considered for production. Two scripts are selected which are then presented in performances open to the public. The Playhouse offers a production experience for young "Rising Stars" to allow middle school through high school students to become further involved in live theatre performance and production.

  2. CHILDREN'S THEATRE - This program involves 40-50 children both on stage and back stage. All aspects of live theatre experience are explored including stage presence, acting and stage movement, lighting, sound, set building, costuming and makeup. The program involves many parents and family members as well. The program runs four to six weeks each summer. Participants come from a number of area communities. After age 16, participants may continue with back stage activities. In their high school senior year, participants are invited to apply for scholarships (described elsewhere) to be used for college expenses.

  3. SCHOLARSHIIPS - Each year, graduating high school seniors who have participated in Playhouse productions are invited to apply for scholarships to be used for their college education. Scholarships are not restricted any particular high school nor are students restricted in their choice of major. Amounts vary but in this fiscal year scholarships were awarded totaling $2,000.

The 3 programs described on its FY2026 Form 990-EZ.
