What Wilderness East does
Mission
In 2025 we continued to provide a valuable service to our colleague nonprofits by buying selected biologically-significant lands and then holding them long enough to allow the initiating land trust to raise acquisition funds from grants and private donors.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
In 2025, Wilderness East (WE) furthered its official mission of advancing wildlands protection in Appalachia by supporting and collaborating with the nonprofit Arc of Appalachia, as prioritized in its Articles of Incorporation. The mission of Wilderness East is to help the Arc of Appalachia, and other nonprofit land trusts when relevant, acquire new natural areas by buying and holding them temporarily in order to give time for the initiating land trust to raise funds to buy and permanently secure them as enduring nature preserves. In 2025, WE acquired, via secured promissory notes held by the Arc of Appalachia, the following properties: Four acquisitions to expand the Arc of Appalachia's Tobacco Barn Hollow Preserve in Pike County, Ohio, the acreages being 46, 5, 24, and 112, respectively, Five Miles on the Gauley near Craigsville, WV, totaling 1,336 acres, The Emerald Forest Hocking Hills, Ohio, totaling 114 acres, and Keystone Swamp in Jackson County, Ohio, totaling 54.065 acres.
$10,629 spent100% of program spendingWilderness East accomplished an inner strengthening in 2025, significantly expanding its board members and invigorating its goals and missions. A website was designed and published, a logo was designed, and plans were made to engage Wilderness East Board Members as volunteers to increase the number of free or low-cost educational programs presented in Arc of Appalachia preserves in 2026. Board Members also committed to significantly increase their knowledge of negotiating and managing conservation easements so that WE could accept conservation easements capably in the future, if the need arose.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2019, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2019, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $2.3M to $6.1M (+162%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
100% of WILDERNESS EAST’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (92% for the typical peer).
