What Through the Trees does
Mission
Through the Trees bridges the digital divide- one signal, one device, one neighbor at a time.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
In 2025, Through the Trees advanced its mission to bridge the digital divide in buncombe, henderson and transylvania counties in western north carolina. Our four branches of the nonprofit are device refurbishing, internet subsidies, digital literacy and broadband advocacy. We secured a collaborative grant with local nonprofits to expand broadband access and promote digital equity, receiving recognition for its regional impact. As the hub, throughout the year, we hosted community forums and hands-on technology labs that helped older adults and low-income residents develop essential digital skills. In partnership with westngn and other regional initiatives, we supported device distribution and broadband infrastructure efforts to strengthen connectivity in rural western north carolina.

By year-end, we had distributed 390 devices. To increase capacity, we secured funding and began searching for a larger workspace to expand our refurbishment operations. We also celebrated and streamlined our processes with 12 community volunteers during a "refurbisher party" to assist with preparing devices for redistribution.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2022, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2022, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $86k to $262k (+204%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
94% of THROUGH THE TREES’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (84% for the typical peer).
