What The Ipswich Local News Inc does

Mission

The organization's mission is to provide accurate, full, and fair coverage of the news in ipswich and rowley, massachusetts, as well as news of interest from surrounding communities.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Provide a print and online publication of a local newspaper to the towns of ipswich and rowley, as well as report on news of interest from surrounding communities. The paper is mailed free to residents, reaching 9,400 households in a community of 20,000 people. In addition to the weekly edition, an online version of the paper includes 180,000 page views per month, up 5,000 views compared to last year.the paper has increased its level of reader engagement based on letters to the editor, emails to newspaper staff, and discussion at numerous community events. It has become the go-to source for local ipswich news. The paper has seen strong support from the community in the semi-annual fundraising drive, and the many handwritten notes of thanks on the importance of local news and the service we provide.the organization also provides a supplement for the neighboring towns of topsfield and boxford, which is distributed free every week around those communities. Readership in those two communities is in the low thousands.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 3 funders, grant income rose $21k → $25k.

2 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 73% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE IPSWICH LOCAL NEWS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE IPSWICH LOCAL NEWS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 81%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

89% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE IPSWICH LOCAL NEWS INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $180k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
