01What it does

What St George Foundation for the Classics does

Mission

The chief mission of the organization is to promote classical education in the Catholic tradition through the establishment of the Chesterton Academy of St. George.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. In order to promote classical education in South Central Michigan the organization made 15 separate grants totaling $302,000 to the Chesterton Foundation of St. George the precursor of the Academy. These grants were used to pay teacher salaries and purchase materials to further the educational work of the Chesterton Foundation which served 14 different students during the year.

  2. In the spring of 2024 the organization took over ownership of the property at 1000 E Porter St. During the year the organization made necessary upgrades to this property required for the Chesterton Foundation to operate as a school. These changes included decorating the space for the school structural changes to bring it up to fire code and landscaping. All these expenses helped provide a place for classical education to take place for many years to come.

Similarly in the fall the organization hosted a literary critic for an evening that drew in over 200 attendees. For these events the organization paid the speakers fees as well as provided refreshments at the events.

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $10k → $25k.

2 of 4 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 24% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $15k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
