01What it does

What Royall House Association does

Mission

To preserve, maintain and restore a historical site for public use and education. The association explores the meanings of freedom and independence before, during and since the american revolution, in context of a household of wealthy loyalists and enslaved africans.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. The royall house and slave quarters continues to experience significant growth. In fy25, our museum and our director was featured in harper's bazaar. We partnered with the boston art triennial to host programs about black cultural production across the city of boston and medford. These include workshops such as weaving, sewing, tie and dye, and traditional hair braiding workshops. We have had over 150 people attend these workshops. In july, we hosted our annual reading of frederick douglass "what to the slave is the fourth of july? And it grew to 150 people during the fy25 year. Our summer season of 2024 had a really nice turnout with visitors coming to the museum consistently. We have continued to expand our reach and grow our influence through private tours and partnerships throughout massachusetts. We have had school groups visit from across the state, and we have served student groups from local programs in roxbury to national summer programs from long beach, california. Overall, attendance is diversifying, and the museum is growing in terms of our program and our local and national reputation.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $25k → $177k.

3 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 43% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ROYALL HOUSE ASSOCIATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ROYALL HOUSE ASSOCIATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 35% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

53% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ROYALL HOUSE ASSOCIATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

43% of ROYALL HOUSE ASSOCIATION's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 67% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $269k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
