01What it does

What Riverpark Coalition does

Mission

Our mission is to work in partnership with stakeholders to expand access to recreational green space, hiking and equestrian trails, native habitat, and riparian wetlands in Long Beach and the surrounding cities.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Community Education and Outreach: Our environmental justice efforts focus on key issues affecting western Long Beach. One major concern is disproportionate pollution, with the area known as the Diesel Death Corridor due to heavy emissions from freeways, the Port of Long Beach, and refineries. This results in higher rates of respiratory illnesses and a reduced life expectancy, which can be 5-10 years shorter than in more affluent areas. Another critical issue is park inequity; western Long Beach has less than one acre of parkland per 1,000 residents, significantly below the 16.7 acres available in eastern Long Beach. The lack of green space impacts physical health, mental well-being, and overall community health. Addressing these disparities is essential for promoting environmental justice, improving public health, and ensuring equitable access to green spaces for all residents

  2. Land Preservation: The coalitions most prominent work is to stop the industrial development of one of the last remaining large parcels of open land along the Los Angeles River. We advocate for this land to be developed as a public park, citing decades of city and county plans that had previously designated the site for open space. We view the proposed industrial development as a direct violation of environmental justice principles and a step backward for the communitys health and vitality. Our advocacy includes legal action, organizing community protests, and petitioning city officials to honor their previous commitments to greening the river corridor.

1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Riverpark Coalition’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of Riverpark Coalition's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $243k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
