01What it does

What Pacific Jazz Orchestra does

Mission

The mission of the Pacific Jazz Orchestra is to entertain and enrich the local community of Los Angeles as well as a global community through performance and education. The Pacific Jazz Orchestra produces an annual concert season and a summer education program.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. PJO presents an outstanding and unique blend of "big band" jazz and classical chamber orchestra featuring bespoke arrangements performed at several mid-size venues in and around Los Angeles. Most are hosted by the venue and some are self-produced. The collaborating venues are: The Wallis Beverly Hills; The Soraya Northridge; Alex Theatre Glendale; The United Theater Downtown LA; Segerstrom Center Costa Mesa; Barclay Theater Irvine.

  2. In order to foster the next generation of musicians and artists the PJO will establish a week-long summer seminar workshop for young musicians. Participants will receive group lessons from orchestra members on their respective instruments and then rehearse together as an ensemble and at the end of the week perform a concert as the Pacific Youth Jazz Orchestra. Under the guidance of the Artistic Director the PJO will give guest conductors and arrangers the opportunity to lead concert projects in an effort to advance diversity in the field of music directors. Each line starts at 100 in 2022, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2022, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

1 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 2% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Pacific Jazz Orchestra’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $30k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
