01What it does

What Orcid Inc does

Mission

Orcid provides an identifier for individuals to use with their name as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. We provide open tools that enable transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and affiliations. We provide this service to help people find information and to simplify reporting and analysis. We do this by providing three interrelated services:- the orcid id: a unique, persistent identifier free of charge to researchers- an orcid record connected to the orcid id, and - a set of application programming interfaces (apis), as well as the services and support of communities of practice that enable interoperability between an orcid record and member organizations so researchers can choose to allow connection of their id with their affiliations and contributions

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Researchers and scholar persistent identifier program - creating a central registry of unique identifiers for individual researchers and an open and transparent linking mechanism between orcid and other research information systems to solve the name ambiguity problem in research communications.

Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
