Support our neighbors in the jail and dc residents in the federal bureau of prisons through specific, tangible actions. Program
Neighbors for Justice's most significant achievement was providing education about dc laws that support public safety and reentry. We shared information with bipartisan policymakers on capitol hill through testimony and briefings grounded in lived experience, helping inform policy discussions with accurate information about dc's legal framework, which has enabled hundreds of returning citizens to rebuild their lives.we wrote over 50 support letters for individuals facing second look and iraa hearings; launched our "intro to tech" program, teaching basic technology skills to returning citizens who had been incarcerated for decades; and hosted a returning citizens picnic bringing together over 100 returning citizens, families, and partner organizations.we also created opportunities for returning citizens to share their experiences with the dc council and at universities, and built partnerships with universities, law firms, churches, and policy organizations, demonstrating that an organization led by people with lived experience can coordinate effective public education programs.
