01What it does

What Missouri Mental Health Foundation does

Mission

Raise public understanding and awareness of issues impacting individuals and families living with mental illness, developmental disabilities and substance use disorders. Also to battle discrimination, stigma, promote care and treatment, and foster inclusion in the community and workforce.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. St. Louis opioid overdose reduction grasssroots project: fatal opioid involved overdoses among black men and women have increased in the city of st. Louis every year since at least 2019. In 2020, the st. Louis metropolitan area accounted for 82% of all fatal overdoses of black people in the state of missouri. Rates of fentanyl-involved deaths continue to be highest among black males in st. Louis city. To address the ongoing increase in overdose fatalities the missouri department of mental health requested assistance at the local level to develop a strategy to reduce these deaths. Dmh agreed to pilot a radically innovative inside/out: approach to empower and build capacity of "grassroot" based entities as viable partners. The identified primary investment strategy was based on the principle that the people who live in the neighborhoods/communities we hope to positively impact are the experts and recognizing the hard work that is occurring by both faith and non-faith groups in community, often with few resources and utilizing volunteers, and not sustained by contracts or grants.

This effort represents one of the foundation's largest investments due to the scale of its communications strategy, professional marketing support, digital infrastructure, and resource distribution efforts. Mmhf continues to partner with a marketing firm to strengthen strategic messaging and ensure communications are clear, consistent, and aligned with best practives in public health engagement. Mmhf expanded statewide distribution of campaign posters, educational materials, and mental health resources through schools, community organizations, conferences, and training. The foundation focuses on website auditing and accessibility improvements to maintain user-friendly experience and ensure compliance with accessiblitiy standards. In 2025, mmhf began development of a promotional video to increase awareness of mental health and enhance long-term funding sustainability. MISSOURI MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION leans on a few funders — its largest provides 78% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MISSOURI MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION.
