What Metro Detroit Black Chamber of Commerce does
Mission
To develop programs and advocate for policies that result in profitable and sustainable black-owned businesses that are connected to public and private economic opportunities, while building trusted relationships.
As stated on its FY2023 Form 990.
Program
The organization officially launched in 2021. However, the work to create an organization that focused on the critical needs of black-owned businesses began during the spring of 2020 at the height of the pandemic. During the pandemic, more than half of black entrepreneurs were at risk of financial distress, in comparison to 27 percent of white entrepreneurs, and 40 percent of black businesses were forced to close entirely. The pandemic highlighted disparities that already existed, including the digital divide and lack of access to critical resources that support business growth. With over 80 percent of detroit's businesses being black-owned, the organization's members have seen first-hand these inequities and challenges across the city. See schedule o for more information.the organization's strategy is supported by three pillars: programming, policy, and partnerships. Two programs that set the foundation for the organization's programming are the capital connect program and the biz wiz program. Both of these programs are focused on finding solutions to the obstacles the organization's members faced, from obtaining an operational license to accepting funding for scaling. This…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2022 to 2023, from $826k to $0 (−100%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 2 of the last 3 reported years ran a deficit.

The officers, directors, trustees and key employees listed on each return. Joined and no longer listed compare each filing with the year before, matching people by surname and first initial; a year after a gap, or a roster under three people, has no comparison.
