01What it does

What Mercury Free Mining Inc does

Mission

Mercury Free Mining Inc.'s (mfm's) purpose is to inspire the global jewelry industry to support the development, discovery, and deployment of efficient gold ore concentrators that will effectively replace the use of toxic mercury to capture gold by some 20 million artisanal and small-scale gold miners (asgm) in more than 70 countries around the world. We are committedthat through our efforts, the 100 million people who depend upon asgm can be healthy and prosperous and mercury pollution in our environment will be dramatically reduced.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Mfm established its core jewelry industry information program educating the jewelry industry regarding the history and impacts of mercury use in gold mining. Part of this education process has been the highlighting how the jewelry industry can benefit by taking a stand in solidarity with the 20 million artisianal and small-scale gold miners who have no alternatives to the use of mercury in order to make their living as gold miners.

  2. Mfm finalized a grant agreement with the gemological institute of america (gia), to fund a joint project between mfm and the alliance for responsible mining (arm) to begin gold ore sampling and testing in annanea, peru. Mfm developed a protocol for a first of its kind ore-sample collection to ship the collected ore samples to innovative processors in four countries on three continents, analyze the gold ore samples and the processor's effectiveness, creating a database others can access and benefit from

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base held at 2 funders, grant income rose $22k → $32k.

1 of 3 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 6% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MERCURY FREE MINING INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MERCURY FREE MINING INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 77% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

83% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MERCURY FREE MINING INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $10k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
