What Mendham Alliance for Preservation & Conservation a Nj Nonprofit does

Mission

Mapc's purpose shall be to provide support and advocacy for sustainable land conservation, preservation and stewardship for mendham township & borough. These include: helping to ensure the preservation of the rural qualities of the mendhams; the preservation and conserve the most sensitive areas outlined in the august 2004 highlands act; identification of contiguous space that can be preserved in perpetuity; development of new conservation zoning categories which will limit non-restrictive rezoning in the township and borough and create valuable sustainable attributes; retain legal, environmental and engineering talent in support of the conservation and preservations goals; seek support from all residents of the mendhams, as well as neighboring communities that benefit from the raritan, passaic and whippany rivers, which originate in the mendhams; and establish a guide which can serve as an aid to incorporate more sustainable qualities in the mendhams.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Spring tree farms zoning change & development:the re-zoning will likely result in the presentation of a new plans for additional lots for future development. The conservation of the most sensitive wetland/wildlife habitat areas was and is the mapc priority. Our hope is to engage early in the process to explore. Environmental engineer & planner review of new plans; endangered species investigation; investigation of the highland act requirements; validate that setbacks are compliant; purchase of contiguous land adjacent to preserved open space; preservation of wetlands and headwater areas; and consideration of ecological maps in all future development discussions at planning board and governing body committees.

  2. Preservation & policy: the mapc became active in the discussion in early february and is working towards the articulation of a preservation credit offset to affordable housing mandates. The current bill does not take key environmental attributes into consideration, which, in many cases, support municipalities beyond the borders of a town. In mendham township's and borough's case, the headwaters of the raritan, passaic and whippany rivers serve over 5 million new jerseyans with drinking water. The work below represents the mapc's best thinking to create a preservation credit for inventoried environmental attributes that can be credited and valued by such legislation.

  3. Kings shopping center v-fee apartments llc project:imagine trying to fit 10 gallons of water into a 5-gallon bucket. This metaphor captures the current situation where v-fee, a developer, is proposing a 5-story, 75-unit multi-family dwelling within the already-bustling kings shopping center in mendham borough, which sits atop of the highest topographical spring of the north branch of the raritan river. This spring, a vital headwater, not only nurtures a preserved wetland but also supplies drinking water to over 2 million new jersey residents. The plan to cram this development into an overburdened area is not just ill-conceivedit's irresponsible. It's time to wholistically rethink this project and ensure that we're not trying to force a gallon into a space that can only handle half of that. Please join the mapc as we grow community support to shrink this development to fit within the natural capacity of our rural and historic mendhambecause when we protect nature, we protect ourselves.
