What Iowa Optometric Association does
Mission
The Iowa Optometric Association is a statewide professional association of optometrists.
As stated on its FY2026 Form 990.
Program
The association provides educational seminars to members. These seminars are used to meet continuing education requirements for license renewal by approximately 650 doctors of optometry. The association promotes healthy vision for children by annually distributing 200,000 student vision cards to every school district in iowa. The association attempts to influence legislation which impacts members by hiring a professional lobbyist and by providing meetings for members to meet legislators. This benefits all members. The association hires staff to assist members in maximizing income from third party payers for optometric services. Approximately 250 members use this service.
The program described on its FY2026 Form 990. Program spending in total: $0.
The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2019 to 2020, from $3.1M to $3.4M (+11%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2022 2%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 2 of the last 10 reported years ran a deficit.
