What Civic AI Security Program Inc does
Mission
CivAI is a nonprofit that spreads knowledge about AI capabilities and dangers in a unique way. Instead of research papers and abstract discussion, we produce interactive software experiences that provide a deep, intuitive sense of what AI can do and where its going. We present these demos to targeted audiences and make scalable versions available to the public. CivAI is aiming for a world where people deeply grasp AI capabilities, and make better decisions because of it. This is a world that holds AI developers responsible for the externalities they are producing, while also finding use cases that transform lives for the better. CivAIs work brings a new kind of evidence to the discourse - simple, intuitive, and incontrovertible because users can interact with it firsthand.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Program
During 2024, CivAI built and presented educational software demonstrations of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and risks, focusing on cybersecurity, election security, and misinformation. Our interactive demos provided tangible, firsthand experience with frontier AI technology to help diverse audiences understand its implications. Many of these demonstrations are publicly accessible on our website, https://civai.org, with titles including The Future of Phishing, Giving AI the Rorschach Test, and Deepfake Sandbox. We delivered over 60 presentations using these demos, to audiences across civil society, government, and media.

Who funds it, year by year
Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.
1 of 1 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of Civic AI Security Program Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
100% of Civic AI Security Program Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $600k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
