01What it does

What Chicago Rescue Authority does

Mission

All-breed dog rescue -- We rescue, provide vital care, and adopt out dogs in the Chicagoland area. We also place an emphasis on educating the public about responsible pet ownership and ways to help lessen the pet overpopulation problem facing our city.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Food costs for animals in our care -- expenses in this category represent expenses incurred for purchasing food for the animals in our care throughout the year. Please note that much of these needs were sponsored by donated food, but the amount represented here is the out-of-pocket expense for the rescue to cover the remaining amount of food needed to sustain the animals in our care that were not covered by in-kind food donations.

    $12,627 spent
    12% of program spending
  2. Veterinary services -- expenses directed toward the vetting of stray or otherwise homeless animals within our rescue organization with the intention of preparing them for adoption and preventing the contraction and spread of disease and preventing additional reproduction by any animal in our care. Benefitted 216 dogs and their families during the 2025 calendar year.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 85% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of CHICAGO RESCUE AUTHORITY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

CHICAGO RESCUE AUTHORITY leans on a few funders — its largest provides 85% of grant income and the top three 100%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

85% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund CHICAGO RESCUE AUTHORITY.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Where its funders are

85% of CHICAGO RESCUE AUTHORITY's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Illinois, across 1 state.

HI

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $6k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
