01What it does

What Brainerd Institute Heritage does

Mission

To preserve, interpret, and advance the academic, artistic, and cultural legacy of the historic Brainerd Institute, an influential educational institution founded in the 19th century to educate African American students in Chester County, South Carolina.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Brainerd Institute Heritage advanced its charitable and educational mission through literacy-through-the-arts programming, cultural education, and historic preservation in Chester, SC. Its primary program, Workshops in Open Fields, provided free, open-access work- shops that strengthen literacy through poetry, visual arts, music, storytelling, and cultural history. Teaching artists and educators lead hands-on instruction to improve reading skills, cultural awareness, and creative expression, especially for children and community members in underserved areas. BIH also supported community cultural events celebrating African American history and conducted planning/stewardship activities to preserve the historic campus.
