What Asphalt Institute Inc does
Mission

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Publications program. The asphalt institute develops a wide range of safety and educational materials. These include textbook-sized technical manuals, smaller topical publications, and a subscription-free online and print magazine aimed at promoting quality construction of asphalt pavements, among many others. Safety-related publications include both print and video media to help educate workers and prevent accidents. Proprietary software is offered to help manage laboratory quality manuals, a key component of lab certification programs.
Industry research. The asphalt institute conducts both funded and non-funded research related to asphalt mixtures, asphalt binders, and asphalt emulsions. The general goal of this research is to advance the knowledge of asphalt binders and mixtures and to improve performance. Public research is published and presented in technical conferences worldwide.
Training. The asphalt institute develops and offers a wide range of training, both web-based and in-person, to audiences worldwide. Some training courses can lead to individual certification by specialty. Examples of training include basic binder technician training, construction of quality asphalt pavements, pavement inspector certification, and basic roofing technician training, to list a few. These training programs are a major part of the asphalt institute's mission to provide continuing education for the industry.
Membership services. The asphalt institute conducts three large in-person membership meetings per year during which the organization's 12 standing committees meet. A leadership development program for members, first-time participants in meetings, mentor program, robust volunteer program, and other internal programs foster member engagement. Members are also kept abreast of industry activities and trends via the organization's monthly enews and other services.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $14M to $12M (−16%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 8% · 2022 0%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
Surplus & reserves
Operating surplus or deficit each year, and months of liquidity in hand. 2 of the last 9 reported years ran a deficit.

Leadership and staff
The officers, directors, trustees and key employees listed on each return. Joined and no longer listed compare each filing with the year before, matching people by surname and first initial; a year after a gap, or a roster under three people, has no comparison.
