What Alachua Audubon Society Inc does

Mission

To foster appreciation and knowledge of birds and other native wildlife, to protect and restore wildlife populations and their habitats, and to promote sustainable use of natural resources.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. CONSERVATION: 1.Financial Support for Wildlife Protection: Each year, we donate to nonprofit organizations to aid in wildlife protection and land preservation. This year, our donation of Purple Martin gourd systems to Orange Lake Overlook Park and the Alachua Conservation Trust property at Prairie Creek and a second gourd system at the city of Gainesville Sweetwater Wetlands Park resulted in the successful fledging of over 80 Purple Martins, a declining species that is almost entirely dependent upon human-provided nesting sites. 2.Southeastern American Kestrel Nest Box Program: Our ongoing program includes monitoring nest boxes for success. We have collaborated with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to gather data and with the Avian Research Conservation Institute to tag nestlings with radio tags, enabling us to track their movements.

  2. EDUCATION: 1.Bird Banding Lab: Since 2019, our bird banding lab, staffed by AAS volunteers and college interns, has been collecting scientific data. This year we trained four university students through our semester-long internship program, with interns also receiving scholarships. 2.Beginning Birder Classes: We continue to offer four 4-week Beginning Birder classes at Santa Fe College, fostering a love for birdwatching in the community. 3.Educational Field Trips: We provide weekly field trips at Sweetwater Wetlands Parks and weekend field trips from September to May, educating the public about local birdlife. 4.School Programs and Environmental Education: Our active education program extends to elementary and middle schools. This year, we helped fund transportation for 15 buses and the program fees for 720 4th graders from 8 elementary schools to nature parks for hands-on environmental education. 5.Backyard Bird Tour: Over 250 members of the public were able to view six yards to learn how to attract more birds and wildlife to their yards by planting native plants, developing water features and offering a diversity of food in a variety of bird feeders. 6.Doug Tallamy Lecture: AAS…
