The annual information return most US tax-exempt organizations file with the IRS.
Form 990 is the annual return that US tax-exempt organizations file with the Internal Revenue Service. It reports revenue, expenses, assets, governance and, for grantmakers, the grants paid during the year.
Private foundations file a variant, Form 990-PF, and smaller organizations file the short 990-EZ. The filings are public. They run roughly 12 to 24 months behind, so the most recent complete picture is usually one to two years old.
