England and Wales Additional Terms: Plinth Data
Contents · 5 sections
Applies to: England and Wales data in the Service, meaning information drawn from the Charity Commission for England and Wales register, the accounts charities file with it, and grant data published to 360Giving, as shown on the /uk pages.
Effective: 22 October 2026 · Version: 1.0
These terms supplement the Terms of Use, which continue to apply in full. Words defined there have the same meaning here.
1. Source and its limits
This supplements section 3 of the Terms of Use. For England and Wales data, the public sources the Service reads are the Charity Commission for England and Wales register and the accounts charities file with it; grant data published to 360Giving under licences that do not require share-alike; figures from UKGrantmaking; and geography from the Office for National Statistics.
- Grant lines are read from filed accounts by automated means. They can be wrong or incomplete even where the document is right. Each line shows where it was seen, and where it was read from a filed accounts document, it links to the page it was read from. Check that page before relying on a figure.
- Amounts are as printed. A funder's accounts and a recipient's accounts can report the same grant differently; the Service shows which figure it counts.
- A page is a floor, not a census. Many charities do not list their grants in their accounts, or list only some of them. How much of each total the Service traces is shown on its pages and on /uk/about.
- Filed accounts documents are shown as filed. We have not checked them against the charity's records.
- England and Wales data is not available through the Grants API, the Ask chat, ad-hoc SQL or the Plinth × Claude connector.
2. Rights
This supplements section 6 of the Terms of Use.
England and Wales data is not public domain. The Charity Commission register is made available under the Open Government Licence v3.0, which permits commercial reuse on condition of attribution. 360Giving grant data and UKGrantmaking figures are made available under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0, which permits reuse on condition of attribution and an indication of changes. Those conditions bind you as they bind us. Do not use any of it in a way that suggests the Charity Commission, a 360Giving publisher or UKGrantmaking endorses you or your use. We claim nothing in the licensed information itself.
Filed accounts documents are the charities' own documents, which the Charity Commission publishes on its register. We show them as filed so that each figure can be checked against its source. We grant no rights in them; reusing a document's own text or design is a matter between you and the charity that wrote it.
The Open Government Licence does not cover personal data. A licence to reuse the information is not permission to process personal data in it; section 10 of the Terms of Use, and data protection law, still apply.
3. Attribution
This supplements section 8 of the Terms of Use.
England and Wales data carries licensed attributions. Where you use a figure drawn from England and Wales data, reproduce the statements that apply to it:
- Built from the Charity Commission for England and Wales register and filed accounts. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0 (https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/).
- Grant data from 360Giving publishers and figures from UKGrantmaking licensed under CC BY 4.0, adapted by us (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).
- For maps and place figures: Source: Office for National Statistics licensed under the Open Government Licence v.3.0. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right. Contains Royal Mail data © Royal Mail copyright and database right, with the current year.
Unlike the credit to us, these are conditions of the licences the information reaches you under, not requests. Do not use the logo of the Charity Commission, 360Giving or UKGrantmaking, or anything else that suggests official status or endorsement.
4. What you may not do
This supplements section 9 of the Terms of Use.
Licensed information is carved out of 3 and 4. Items 3 and 4 of section 9 of the Terms of Use do not restrict what you do with unmodified licensed information obtained from us, meaning the Charity Commission register, filed accounts and 360Giving data as their publishers released them. That information reaches you under its own licence, and we do not narrow it. What items 3 and 4 protect is the part that is ours: the grant lines read from filed accounts, the compilation, the matching of names to registered charities, the derived measures and classifications, and any record we have altered, combined, enriched or re-keyed. The attribution conditions at section 3 of these terms still apply, as does section 10 of the Terms of Use.
5. Information about people
This supplements section 10 of the Terms of Use.
Filed accounts documents shown through the Service can name trustees, staff, donors and other individuals. Section 10 of the Terms of Use applies to those names as it applies to everything else in the Service. Where the Service's own text withholds a private individual's name, you must not use a filed accounts document, or any other source, to re-identify that individual or attach the name to the Service's data.
